في أول فيلم كويتي روائي طويل، يعود بنا المخرج خالد الصدّيق إلى كويت ما قبل اكتشاف النفط، ويحكي قصة شاب والده صياد لؤلؤ أُصيب بإعاقة دائمة بعد أن هاجمته سمكة قرش في أحد الأيام، فيحظر على ابنه الغوص، أو حتى الذهاب إلى البحر، خشية تعرّضه لمصير مماثل. الشاب مغرم بابنة أحد التجار، ولكنه غير قادر على الزواج منها لفقره، فيلحّ على أبيه كي يسمح له بالغوص أملاً بأن يجمع ثروة تجعله أهلاً لها. الطامّةُ الكبرى تتمثّل في أن والدي الفتاة قررا تزويج الفتاة، رغماً عنها، إلى رجل مسنّ، ثريّ، بينما الفتى ماضٍ يخوض غمار البحر غافلاً عن مصير حبيبته.

مخرج ومنتج كويتي حصل على شهرة عالمية. أخرج أوّل فيلمه الروائي الطويل "بس يا بحر"، والذي يرصد حياة صيادي اللؤلؤ في مرحلة ما قبل النفط بمنطقة الخليج، وفاز فيلمه الثاني "عرس الزين"، المقتبس عن رواية الكاتب السوداني الراحل الطيب صالح، بجائزة في مهرجان كان عام 1976. يترأس الصدّيق حالياً جميعة الخليج السينمائية، التي تأسست عام 2000 لدعم صناعة السينما الخليجية.

Kuwait's first feature film is a period piece about the country before oil was discovered. The young son of a crippled pearl diver is forbidden to go to sea, because a shark injured his father and he does not want his son to suffer a similar fate. The boy is in love with a merchant's daughter, but her parents wish for her to marry into wealth. After finally securing his father's permission to go to sea, the boy leaves. However, the girl's parents decide to marry her against her wishes to a rich, old man. Unaware of his beloved's fate, the boy continues to work in this dramatic tale of love and adventure…

DIRECTED BY KHALED AL SIDIK

Khalid Al-Siddiq is an internationally renowned director and producer from Kuwait. He directed the first Kuwaiti feature film, "Bas Ya Bahar" (The Cruel Sea), a tragic tale set amongst the Gulf's pearl-diving community in the pre- oil era. His second film, "The Wedding Zein," based on the novel by the late Sudanese author Tayeb Saleh, was recognised with an award at Cannes in 1976. He currently heads the Gulf Film Association, set up in 2000 to promote Gulf films.
